PATRIOTS WIN THRILLER ON LAST PLAY
The Paulding County Patriots improved to 1-1 on the young season with a thrilling victory over the New Manchester Jaguars of Douglas County Friday night 24-21. Junior place kicker Ryan Martin kicked a 33 yard field goal as time expired to give the Patriots the victory. Martin who had previously missed two similiar attempts was dead perfect on this attempt when it mattered the most splitting the uprights with room to spare with but 2 seconds on the game clock.
Coach Van Spence first victory was a hard fought affair with the Patriots surrendering a 2 touchdown lead in the 4th quarter allowing the game to be tied with just minutes to go. The Patriot defense stiffened and held New Manchester as they went for it at the 50 yard line and turned the ball over on downs, Patriot junior quarterback Brantley Mauldin led the the Patriots down the field 34 yards completing clutch passes to Collin Bodnar and Jason Ledford to move them into field goal range.
Mauldin passed for 200 yards on the night on 15 of 30 passing and throwing one touchdown to Tyrese Hart. The Patriots relied heavily on running back Tre Lewis as carried he the ball 29 times for 171 tough yards scoring 2 touchdowns.Also of note was the Patriot defense that forced several turnovers against a talented Jaguar squad.
The Patriots take this week off and open up their region schedule next week at Hiram.
