Four students from Tema Hoskins, South Paulding High School Environmental Science program was recently chosen to present a poster at Upcoming Georgia Adopt a Stream’s annual “Confluence” conference. The students, Annabelle Renner, Melinda Downey, Destini Chambers, Lyric Portwood, and Montgomery Blake are presenting their project that investigated the disparity between the pH of the water and soil in the campus wetland and look at pH effects on plant health.
Paulding Deputies performed a traffic stop at the Top of the Ridge gas station which is located at the corner of Ridge Road and Cohran Store Road. As a result of the traffic stop, they discovered a large amount of illegal narcotics and a gun. Agents from the Haralson-Paulding Drug Task Force assisted with the case, leading to 5 arrests.
For the remainder of the session, all Senate bills passing the House; House bills passing the Senate, will make their way to Governor Kemp for his final review and signature into law. This includes House Bill 316, which authorizes the purchase of new voting equipment to further secure our Georgia elections. Last week also brought the passage of numerous measures aimed at furthering access to quality healthcare within our state.
Superior Court Judge David Lyles spoke to the Rotary Club about the most recent accountability Court in Paulding County. It is a program designed to provide case disposition for people with a documented mental illness who have been charged with a crime. In many ways, Georgia is leading the nation in prison reform, and Paulding County is leaving the state through Accountability Court programs.
The Shepherd's Rest Ministries Women's Shelter operates around the clock, 24 hours and 7 days a week to take calls from women and families in dire need. During 2018 over 16,700 calls were answered and 14,892 calls were followed up on. Legal advocacy helped 457 women with temporary restraining orders. The 2 crisis houses that they operate provided shelter for 26 women and 60 children.
Paulding Rotary welcomed Seth Bice. Mr. Bice is a Cobb County firefighter and a resident of Paulding County. Last year Mr. Bice founded and coordinated the first Paulding Public Safety Rodeo. The rodeo was held in March of last year in Earl Duncan Park. While first-time benefit events are usually difficult to coordinate, the rodeo was very much a success.
Paulding County UGA Extension Master Gardener Volunteers recently recognized Marcia Riley as Paulding County Master Gardener of the Year as well as the Tracy Grice of the Paulding County Farm Bureau as the Friend of Master Gardeners at their Annual New Beginnings Celebration Dinner.
