We like to do human interest stories here at the Dallas New Era. And, this one is great! Matthew Wright is a newly established lawyer here in Dallas, and he is legally blind. This story will hopefully inspire you to keep dreaming and keep working hard and you will succeed.

Matthew Wright is a newly licensed attorney.  He graduated high school, college, and law school as an honors student.  He graduated from East Paulding High School.  He received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia, and he received his law degree from Georgia State University College of Law. Matthew had the following to say about himself.
“I grew up in Dallas, and I still reside in Dallas.  As a result of a congenital visual impairment, I am legally blind.  As a young child, my family was given a very gloomy prediction about my future.  Based on my condition, I was expected to have extreme disablement to my body and speech.  I was also expected to have a mental disability.  Thankfully, many of the predictions by doctors were incorrect.  I give the credit for this and the other many blessings to God.  Despite the predictions, I worked and advocated to remain in the same classes with my peers.  My faith has played an important role in trying to stay focused and determined when things are frustrating.  Support from friends and family has also been very helpful in keeping me moving forward.  As a result of having a visual disability, I have faced several social obstacles.  My visual impairment also has several physical challenges.  For example, I am extremely sensitive to light.  I also have cataracts in my eyes.  Blurry vision and headaches are a daily occurrence.   As a student, perhaps the most frustrating challenge was working slower than most people.  It typically took two to four times as long to complete assignments and activities as the average student.  Moving at a slower pace is still very much a challenge today. With a few exceptions, most of my teachers were supportive and willing to provide accommodations in the classroom.  While in college at UGA, the university had a great disability resource center.  However, some, but not all, professors disliked and opposed the requests for accommodations, such as a notetaker or close seating.  In law school, with only a few exceptions, most professors were helpful in providing in-class accommodations.  I also had to request accommodations for the bar exam, such as large print documents and extended time. Thankfully, I passed the bar exam on the first attempt despite some obstacles.  I received my law license last year, and I am working to establish myself in the local legal community.”   “For everyone, there will always be some type of challenge. After accepting that life is tough, you come to accept that you have the responsibility to make life better. You can make life better. You cannot control everything that happens in life. You can, though, get better at controlling how you respond to what life sends your way.” Matthew is working to establish a law practice focused primarily on personal injury and some estate planning matters, such as wills.
