During the 1920s, small towns across America were connected by the new highway, known as U.S. 41. Vacationers had a quicker route to their Florida vacation when traveling south. Along this route in north Georgia, a woman began selling her bedspreads, which became a staple. Sellers would hang these beautiful bedspreads for travelers to see as they meandered down this route, thus the nickname would become Peacock Alley. From this weave would spawn the wave of carpet manufacturing that would sell 80% of the nation’s floor covering that originated in Dalton.dal 600
With the development of I-75, much of the rich history in this region would be bypassed. However, those who merge off the interstate onto Route 41 will discover what would become known as Peacock Alley, Bedspread Boulevard, and the Dixie Highway. A must stop would be the Bartow History Museum, which is located in downtown Cartersville. Here, one can step back in time to see a grand collection from that era of the textiles. However, the time machine does not stop. Travel back in the footsteps of the Civil War as Sherman’s “March To the Sea” would cause a fight with brother against brother. Bartow County would echo its own story to be heard by those who would listen as their home became a battlefield. Learn of the early Native Americans and early pioneers who inhabited this region. The museum is very impressive for groups of children or adults. It is located in downtown Cartersville. Phone: 770-382-3818. Website: bartowhistorymuseum.org.
The Booth Western Art Museum is another must see downtown. It houses the largest collection of western art in the nation. Discover how they are connected to the Smithsonian. dal 600 bFor those who enjoy Christian history, like myself, the Roselawn Museum is located near the downtown district. It was home to Sam Jones, whom some call the Billy Graham of the turn of the century. The Ryman Auditorium was built for his revivals in Nashville, Tennessee. The home was a small structure originally before it was raised, and the bottom was added later. Today, it is a museum and event facility. Location: 224 W Cherokee Ave, Cartersville, GA 30120. Phone: 770-387-5162. Website: roselawnmuseum.com
The downtown district has really cool shops to browse, and some restaurants that have been serving customers for over 50 years. While in Cartersville, take a side trip to the quaint town of Adairsville. In the historic downtown, visitors will discover restaurants, a bakery, tea room, coffee shop, and plenty of browsing. The Barnesley Gardens Resort located in Adairsville is known across the nation for its award winning service, amenities, and first class accommodations. The new LakePoint Sporting Community places Bartow County as a major tourist attraction where locals and groups can enjoy opportunities brought to the region. Plus, other outdoor attractions already make Bartow County an ideal destination for boating, swimming, fishing, and hiking.
