Daughters of the American Revolution, Captain Edward Hagin Chapter, Celebrate 35th  Anniversary

DAR Members 800Dallas, Ga. – May 22, 2016 – Sunday, Daughters of the American Revolution, Captain Edward Hagin Chapter, gathered inside the Paulding Chamber of Commerce, along with many special guests (Virginia Grace Lingelbach/NSDAR National Candidate Office of Corresponding Secretary General, Joyce Ball Patton/Georgia State Society NSDAR State Regent Elect, Howard Maxwell/Representative State House District 17, Micah Gravely/Representative State House District 67, Wayne Brown/Sr. Vice President Sons of the American Revolution, Tony Crowe/Paulding County Commissioner, Stephen Crew/Member of the Historic Courthouse Board, and Chapter and Honorary DAR Chapter Regents ) to celebrate the chapter’s 35 years of service to God, Home, and Country.
Chapter Regent Hilda Shipp welcomed everyone, introduced honored guests, then introducing her mother, Mrs. Frances Michael. Both Mrs. Shipp and Mrs. Michael are founding members of the Captain Edward Hagin Chapter.
Mrs. Michael spoke proudly of the chapter’s history but admitted getting her to join DAR, back in the day, was no easy feat.  When asked 35 years ago if she would get involved in the historical society’s active volunteerism she told the chapter regent at the time, “I’ll join but don’t expect me to do anything.” Well, that was countless fried apple pies and homemade breads ago.  The money in sales from those baked goods helped in countless donations going towards DAR schools (Tamassee, Crossnore, Berry College) and to contribute funds for the Veterans Memorial in Dallas, Georgia.   Mrs. Michael credits the DAR motto (God, Home, and Country) for keeping her going all these years. Even more chapter accomplishments include awarding Junior ROTC Medals and Certificates to five Paulding County High Schools and one Haralson County High School. Recipients must have demonstrated outstanding ability and achievement, loyalty and patriotism, and earned a record of military and scholastic achievement during their participation in an ROTC program. This year’s award winner from Hiram High School is Maya Gregory who attended the celebration with her proud mother. Mr. Howard Maxwell, State House Representative District 17, wrapped up the celebration by recognizing the DAR Captain Edward Hagin Chapter.  He read from a House Resolution honoring Captain Edward Hagin on the occasion of their 35 th Anniversary and emphasized their patriotic contributions as a commemorative partner in honoring our nation’s Vietnam Veterans on the 50 th Anniversary of the Vietnam War, and for patriotic service recognizing high school outstanding ROTC members, as well as high school Good Citizens.
Visiting DAR Chapter Regents included:   Brenda Tackett, Captain Thomas Cobb; Leslie Olejnik, Cherokee; Sylvia Parish, Colonel John McIntosh; Anita Mashburn, Fielding Lewis; and past DAR Chapter Regents Elsie Lawson and Linda Harvey, Atlanta; Elaine Baker Cross, Fielding Lewis; and Marjorie Wilson, Old Noonday. Special guests were Micah Gravely, State House Representative District 67; Tony Crowe, Paulding County Commission Post IV; and Stephen Crew, Board member of the Historic Paulding County Courthouse, and Al Walker, the Mayor of Ynot, Georgia. DAR is a service organization founded in 1890. The objectives and activities are "Historical, Educational and Patriotic."
